Dissertação de mestrado em Informatics EngineeringDigital portfolios (also known as e-Portfolios) can be described as digital collections of artifacts, being both a product (a digital collection of artifacts) and a process (reflecting on those artifacts and what they represent). It is an extension of the traditional Curriculum Vitae, which tells the educational and professional milestones of someone, while the portfolio proves and qualifies them (e.g.: annually thousands of students finish a Master degree on Informatics, but only one has built Vue, Twitter or Facebook – the Portfolio goes beyond the CV milestones by specifying the person’s output throughout life and distinguishing them). e-Portfolios augment this by introducing new digital representations and workflows, exposed to a community, being both a product and a process. This approach can be useful for individual self-reflection, education or even job markets, where companies seek talented individuals, because it expands the traditional CV concept and empowers individual merit. There have been many studies, theories, and methodologies related with e-Portfolios, but transpositions to web applications have been unsuccessful, untuitive and too complex (in opposition to the CV format, which had success in various applications, for example LinkedIn). This project aims to study new approaches and develop an exploratory web/mobile application of this method ology, by exploring the potential of social networks to promote them, augmented by emergent web technologies. Its main output is the prototype of a new product (a social network of e-Portfolio) and its design decisions, with new theoretical approaches applied to web development. By the end of this project, we will have idealized a web infrastructure for interacting with networks of users, their skills, and communities seeking them. The approach to the development of this platform will be to integrate emerging technologies like WebAssembly and Rust in its development cycle and document our findings. At the end of this project, in addition to the prototype of a new product, we hope to have contributed to the State of the Art of Web Engineering and to be able to answer questions regarding new emerging web development ecosystems.

In recent years, the dynamic evolution of the pharmaceutical sector has imposed significant challenges to countries and their health systems in terms of access to medicines. At the European level, although the evaluation of medicines is based on harmonized criteria, the granting of marketing authorization is not, per se, a guarantee that there will be equitable and universal access. However, medicines evaluation did not always follow harmonized criteria. Several international cooperation initiatives were decisive in providing regulators with tools that would contribute to face the imposed challenges and allowed to achieve this harmonization. One of the most relevant examples is, inevitably, the Common Technical Document. Currently, the European model for medicines evaluation is well established and uniformized in the community, depending the grant of marketing authorization on one of several procedures included in the European regulatory framework. In this sense, the problems related to access do not lie in the granting of marketing authorization, but in other areas, such as the health technology assessment or pricing and reimbursement decisions, where there is great heterogeneity that constrains the access between the various countries of the European Union, as represented by the case of orphan drugs. This monography sought to analyze several areas and actions relevant to improve access. Therefore, resorting to Horizon Scanning initiatives, wider use of health technology assessment as a prioritization tool in decision-making, more incorporation of Real Word Evidence and adoption of new strategies related to price negotiation, combined with better supranational cooperation, are examples of actions that will contribute to this objective. Finally, and due to its nature, European pharmaceutical strategy may play a decisive role in carrying out several of these actions

NEW LOCATIONS AND HABITAT STUDY OF THE RARE IBERIAN ENDEMISM

    Get PDF
Serapias perez-chiscanoi Acedo is an Iberian endemism (Orchidaceae) initially found along the Guadiana river basin (Extremadura of Spain), in wet (not flooded) grasslands, on siliceous sands, from 100 to 400m. The species’ presence in Sado Basin (Portugal) was first discovered by Pereira et al. (2008) in Baixo Alentejo (Alvito, Vila Nova da Baronia). This population (200 individuals) was monitored from 2002 to 2007, in order to study the habitat characteristics and ecological succession. Very recently, two new locations were found in Central Portugal: one close to Abrantes (Alferrarede), and another in Serra de Sicó (Pombal, Ereiras), locating the taxon in the basins of the rivers Tagus and Mondego, respectively. Although it is considered rare, being protected under Spanish laws, this orchid occurs in vulnerable habitats that require conservation. Still little is known about its biology and ecology, and it does not benefit from any legal protection in Portugal. This work comprises its habitats in Portugal, focusing in flora and vegetation analysis (classic sigmatist method of Braun-Blanquet, phytosociological relevés and tables), geology, biogeography, bioclimatology and top soil characteristics. The population near Alferrarede (occurring in a degraded clearing of Eucalyptus sp. forest), is placed in the cork oak climatophilous series gaditan-algarvian and lusitan-extremadurean Asparago aphylli-Querceto suberis sigmetum, and its sub-serial stages Erico scopariae-Quercetum lusitanicae, Asparago aphylli-Myrtetum communis, Thymo villosi-Ulicetum airensis and Trifolio cherleri-Plantaginetum bellardii. The population found in 2010 in Ereiras, in calcareous substrates, is included in the Nature 2000 Network (Sítio Sicó/Alvaiázere - PTCON0045). The dominant climatophilous series is Arisaro-Quercetum broteroi sigmetum, endemic for the Dividing Portuguese and Ribatagan-Sadensean sectors, with the sub-serial stages Lavandulo luisieri-Ulicetum jussiaei, Phlomido lychnitidis-Brachypodietm phoenicoidis (correspondent to the priority habitat “6210: Semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates (Festuco Brometalia)(*important orchid habitats)”) and Trifolio cherleri-Plantaginetum bellardii. The studied habitats share a strong Mediterranean character, having a preference for moist soils covered by perennial and annual grasslands (in humid depressions of the soil), at the humid fringes of Ulex sp. heaths, in the understorey of oak formations

Major Minors - Ontological representation of minorities by newspapers

    Get PDF
The stigma associated with certain minorities has changed throughout the years, yet there’s no central data repository that enables a concrete tracking of this representation. Published articles on renowned newspapers are a way of determining the public perception on this subject, mainly digital newspapers, being it through the media representation (text and photo illustrations) or user comments. The present paper seeks to showcase a project that attempts to fulfill that shortage of data by providing a repository in the form of an ontology: RDF triplestores composing a semantic database (W3C standards for Semantic Web). This open-source project aims to be a research tool for mapping and studying the representation of minority groups in a Portuguese journalistic context over the course of two decades.(undefined

Automatic simulation models generation of warehouses with milk runs and pickers

To help a company of the Bosch Group to reduce its costs (both in time and space) with its supermarket, a micro simulation model was developed in Simio. Particularly, the tool is able to model pickers riding milk runs to collect containers of products, from a supermarket, to satisfy the needs of the production lines. Practitionaer may benefit from this tool, since it is able to model different supermarket scenario, for instance different storage strategies. Additionally, the supermarket itself is automatically created, through an Add-in of Simio that was developed in C#, which implements the API of Simio. Conclusions and future work are discussed. This work has been co-supported by SI I&DT project in joint-promotion nº 36265/2013 (HMIEXCEL 2013-2015 Project) and by FCT Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia in the scope of the project: PEst-OE/EEI/UI0319/2014.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Using simio to automatically create 3d warehouses and compare different storage strategies

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on a simulation based approach to reduce warehouse costs. At an early stage, the tool needs to be able to generate different types of warehouses. To accomplish this, a Simio add-in was built in C#, using the Simio API, where the user only needs to insert the layout data on an excel spreadsheet. Afterwards, the created warehouse is capable of modelling different storage strategies and compare them. The obtained results indicate that the proposed strategy is able to reduce the picking time in about 15% and the number of stops per milk run in 50%. Moreover, it was found that the strategy currently in use needs 35% more space than the proposed one. This work has been co-supported by SI I&DT project in joint-promotion nº 36265/2013 (HMIEXCEL - 2013-2015 Project) and by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia in the scope of the project: PEstOE/EEI/UI0319/2014.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Simulation model generation for warehouse management: Case study to test different storage strategies

    Get PDF
A simulation model generator was developed to help a company of the Bosch Group to reduce costs in time and space with its warehouse. The simulation models are automatically created in Simio and can simulate pickers riding milk runs to collect containers from the warehouse, to satisfy the needs of production lines, assisting warehouse management by testing different storage strategies. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to present the developed generator and to use it in a case study, to test different storage policies for the company. The generator was validated, as was the simulation model automatically created. With this tool, some suggestions could be made to the company in question. Namely, it was shown that it would not be possible to maintain the FIFO rule and, at the same time, eliminate the upper floor of all racks for ergonomic reasons. To allow this, the rate of replacing containers should be synchronised with the needs of production lines. Alternatively, it was also shown that the performance of the warehouse would improve by dividing it into zones allocated to each milk run. This work has been supported by QREN: FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: PDE/BDE/114566/2016 – AESI: Advanced Engineering Systems for Industry doctoral programme

A new methodology to predict the optimum pressing time for wood-based panels produced with low formaldehyde emission resins

    Get PDF
Hot-pressing is the most important and costly operation in the manufacture of wood-based panels. Therefore, a rigorous control of all processing variables is necessary to ensure product quality and reducepressing time. This is particularly relevant because of the changes in resin formulations that have occurredalong the last decade, due to the stringent regulations on formaldehyde emissions from wood-basedpanels. In many industries, the scheduling of the press cycle is still performed based on past operatingconditions, developed for traditional formulations and are not adapted to the new low formaldehydeemissions resins. For these new resins, the interaction between resin cure kinetics, bond strengthdevelopment, mat rheological behaviour and heat and mass transfer during pressing is still not fullyunderstood. The aim of this work is to understand the influence of the pressing operating conditions on theperformance of particleboards bonded with a Carb II class fortified UF resin. Several trials were carriedout on a computer controlled lab scale hot-press, varying the venting start time, the total pressing time andthe moisture content on the mat face layer. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed in order toevaluate the significance level of the effects of these factors on particleboard physico-mechanicalproperties and formaldehyde emission.A new methodology has been developed by combining results of mat internal temperature evolution andbond strength development curves obtained using ABES apparatus to estimate the internal bond strength. This methodology allowed predicting the minimum pressing time needed to obtain a panel that meets thestandard specifications
